How PRELEX Can Treat Pre-Cataract Conditions
PRELEX stands for Presbyopia Lens Exchange, and is a procedure that replaces the eye's natural lens with an artificial lens. This lens replacement is also done to treat cataracts and is then referred to as Cataract Surgery.
If you have reached the age of 40 or 45, you may have noticed the blurry near vision (presbyopia) that comes to everyone in mid-life. If you are about age 60 or more, and are noticing a new blurriness at all distances, your eyes may be starting to develop cataracts. Both presbyopia and cataracts are problems with the eye's lens and while presbyopia can be treated in several ways, cataracts cannot be treated except by removing the damaged lens and replacing it with an artificial lens.
One of the lens features that is essential for good eyesight is its transparency. It must allow light to travel through it unimpeded to the retina. The retina acts like the eye's camera film and receives the image information contained in the light rays. Retinal cells convert that image information into electrical energy so that the eye's optic nerve can carry it to the brain for interpretation.
When anything blocks light from reaching the retina, vision is reduced. So when the lens starts to develop cataracts, some incoming light is scattered instead of being focused on the retina, and vision starts to dim.
What are Cataracts?
Cataract are areas of damage to the lens protein fibers. In a normal eye, these microscopically tiny fibers are arranged in a parallel way and do not interfere with light passing through the lens. Somewhere around the age of 60 or more, a cloudiness starts to form in the lens because the parallel formation is disrupted, and this happens to everyone who lives long enough.
At first, the cloudiness is slight and you may not realize anything is happening. Your doctor may surprise you when he diagnoses early cataracts. But once they start, cataracts continue developing and progressively impair your vision until blindness will occur if nothing is done.
Usually, if one eye develops cataracts, the other eye does too, although they may develop at different rates. At some point, they will start to interfere with your vision, and usually it is considered time for cataract surgery when your daily activities are affected by vision loss. However, you do not have to wait until then.
PRELEX to Correct Multiple Vision Problems
By the time cataracts develop, presbyopia has been causing blurry near vision for years. Perhaps you have myopia or hyperopia and were told it was too severe for you to have LASIK, and in that case, you have been wearing glasses or contacts most of your life.
PRELEX might be an excellent way to correct vision problems you have had for a long while and at the same time eliminate any need for cataract surgery in the future. You do not need to wait until your cataracts have become sight-threatening to have PRELEX. The artificial lenses used in PRELEX use differing technologies but they all give clear vision at all distances and they can never develop cataracts.
The artificial lenses, called intraocular lenses (IOLs), are placed in the same membrane pocket that held the natural lens. That is behind the iris (colored part). You will not feel the presence of an IOL and there is no maintenance required. It is a short and easy procedure, done on an outpatient basis. You will immediately have improved vision and can go home after your procedure.
