How Pregnancy Affects Sleep

During pregnancy, women may experience problems when it comes to sleeping

. As pregnancy progresses, sleeping becomes more difficult as a result of certain positions being uncomfortable. Those who usually sleep on their stomach or back will find that they need to practice sleeping in new positions in order to remain comfortable.

During the first stages of pregnancy, a womans progesterone levels will rise, resulting in a sudden drowsy feeling throughout the day. Many pregnant women may find that they are unable to function at work properly as a result of feeling sleepy constantly. Taking regular naps will help to tackle constant drowsiness and enable better performance at work and more energy for other tasks.

Women that favour back and stomach positions for sleeping will find that they will eventually need to change their sleeping position during the later stages of pregnancy. Sleeping on the side is a good position as it helps to improve the flow of nutrients to the foetus. It is important that pregnant women become used to this position by practising it in the earlier stages of the pregnancy.

Using extra pillows can help to provide more comfortable sleeping positions during pregnancy. Placing small cushions under the small of the back can help to provide more support during sleep. It is important that women try to avoid sleeping on their back during pregnancy, as this position is not only uncomfortable but also causes fainting and dizziness, which could lead to further complications. This is a result of strain being placed on the large blood vessel that returns blood to the heart.

Regular naps in a comfortable armchair will help to battle constant drowsiness throughout the day. There are also a wide variety special pillows designed for pregnant women that will provide extra support.
