How Prk Can Right Your Eyesight

Another way to right a person's sight or refractive error is through PRK or photorefractive keratectomy

. Even though PRK is an earlier mode of refractive operation, it is still regularly employed as an alternative to LASIK.

PRK involves reshaping the front surface of the eye (cornea) to redirect light passing through the eye, focusing the previously misguided rays onto the back of the eye (retina).

Before operation proceeds, the eyes are examined to ascertain the safety of the patient. The main criteria needed for PRK are:

Healthy eyesight

Minimum 18 years of age

nearsightedness or Myopia of less than -12.00

Stable sight (refraction) for at least 12 months, verified by an optometrist

No medications that can potentially slow down recuperation - steroids or immunosuppresants

No inherent eye diseases - cataract or macular degeneration

To measure the contours of both the front and back surface of the cornea, a process called corneal topography, will also be performed. The contour is then assessed to ensure the cornea is devoid of irregularities which may hinder successful PRK surgery.

Corneal thickness is also measured with a pachymeter. Although PRK only involves the external layers of the cornea and can be successful for even very thin corneas, this measurement is still necessary. Just like laser eye treatment, individuals with Exceptionally thin corneas will be fruitless with PRK.

The beginning step of the operation involves local anaesthetic of the eye. The corneal epithelium, which is the outermost layer of the eye, will be removed afterwards using an excimer laser or a fine surgical brush containing dilute alcohol.

The underlying layer of the eye, the stroma, is then vaporized (ablated) with an excimer laser while the patient looks at a mark. In bursts, the laser will remold the cornea by blasting fires to change its form. The preoperative prescription should correspond with the resulting shape of the cornea and it should be remembered that the depth of vaporization will adjust from one person to the other. With today's technology, excimer lasers now use eye tracking systems so the laser will not blast when the patient is not looking at the target.

After the operation, a bandage contact lens will be applied on the cornea to speed up the healing process. Within one week, the corneal epithelium is expected to regrow as part of the healing process. This period will result to discomfort, fuzzy, and fluctuating vision for the patient. Topical antibiotics and lubricants need to be applied to the eyes at steady intervals to preclude likely infections and downplay irritation.

As the process of PRK only vaporizes the front surface of the eye, this method is employed when the cornea is very thin. It works well for low to moderate prescriptions. Because optic acuity is as impressive as other techniques such as LASIK, PRK is still being used today by leading ey
