How Racing Helmets Protect Your Head
You may be a safe and stable driver, but accidents may occur anytime
. And it is not necessary that it may your fault, often drunk drivers, amateur riders and weather play a big role in this. In most accidents the injuries may be serious, but it may be fatalistic when it hurts the head.
The head is probably the most vulnerable part of the human body, and a seat belt or protective gear may not be able to help if the head is jerked around uncontrollably. This is why most bikers and racecar drivers used the helmet.
Racing helmet is designed to dissipate impact energy over the entire helmet and prevent debris from puncturing it. In fact, it is mandatory for all riders to wear this gear while competing.
Most participants and professional riders are known to wear the
fullface helmet. These are designed to cover the entire face, along with mouth and chin. You may also find people an open-face helmet, which only covers the head. However, along with these you need to have protective goggles. Either ways, there are three main sections to racing helmets:
Outer shell: The outer shell design needs to be as per the rules laid down by racing company. Once the customized design is approved, a nickel model is made for that helmet. There is a thin gel coat with special resin that is made of several types of glass, carbon, Kevlar and other exotic fibers and weaves. After adding this to shell a glossy outer layer is created as per the wearers choice.
Protective liner: The next layer after the outer shell is this one. It is a foam casing which is specially created for the helmet and it is at the crown of the helmet. This line of protection is used to absorb the energy that the outer shell has not absorbed. It is usually made from polystyrene or polypropylene.
Inner liner, padding and hardware: This is the internal padding found in most helmets. It is foam fitting and created from nylon or Nomex. The former is more common, but the latter is used often for expensive helmets as it is a special fire-retardant material made by DuPont. The best part about it is that it doesn't melt, drip, burn or support combustion.
Besides these 3 main components, you may find that these motorcycle half helmets as well as the full ones are equipped with cheek pads, chin straps and visors.
