How Reconditioned Engines Are Forged?
If you ever wondered how reconditioned engines are built then go through this quick overview of the whole process.
First and foremost the core unit is stripped and brought into most basic form. All the auxiliary components and attachments are removed to the point that only the engine head and block along with sump assembly are left. After this initial dissection, these three main components are further segregated to gain access to internal-most parts like pistons, crankshafts, connecting rods.
At the end of this first phase, a stripped engine block is left in its most basic form, which is then sent for thorough cleaning. In most cases a specialized hot wash system is used to scour away any grease from the outside or inside. It is only after this phase that the main block is sent for assessment, If engine block is deemed feasible for rebuilt or recondition, only then it is forwarded to the next phase.
In third phase of reconditioning the engine, it is sent to machining department. This department examines the basic unit to the extent that even cylinders wall dimensions and oval-ness are measured. This segment is of vital importance as at the end of it engineers and mechanics can approximate, realistically, regarding the amount of work needed to bring engine back to working condition.
In the fourth stage of reconditioning, mechanists start hammering their hammer on disfigured components, metaphorically speaking, in reality high-end machines are used to grind and polish engine block. In pure mechanical and technical terms this means either using bigger, oversized pitons along with similar ring sets or simply improving size of block to create a better fit with cylinder sleeve. Now, opting for the second option is favorable as it aids in bringing engine back to original factory specs; this allows use of more economical and more readily available genuine spare parts for the engine.
Concurrent to this fourth machining phase, other engine components which have been separated a while back are also being subjected to similar scrutiny. Connecting rods and pistons are separated; square-ness along with straightness of connecting rods is closely monitored, whereas piston rings and crankshafts are checked for wear and tear after cleaning. These components are often replaced, if found out of tolerance range or too badly damaged, otherwise they are just polished.
Once these intricately complex phases are completed, actual rebuild of engine starts. Engine block is integrated with all other parts to bring it back to its functional form.
