In the last ten to fifteen years, technology has already changed the work place beyond recognition
. Something as simple as cell phones, digital printers and eMail are things we often take for granted, but if you really look at it you will see just how it transformed the way we work and do business. The traditional "office" has seen some radical changes and in many ways its a real relieve to break free from the Dilbert-like cubicle environment that has depressed office workers for more than a decade.
The current trend is for decentralized offices. The idea of being assigned to a desk and clocking in 9 to 5 every day is fast becoming a thing of the past. Not only is it counter productive but its boring, old fashioned and a sure fire way to get very little out of your staff. Many technology companies are leading the way and if you look at the way companies like Google and Facebook approach the work environment you can see where we are moving towards.
Mobile computing is one of the driving forces behind all this and if you look at the possibilities that just a laptop and Wi-Fi can offer, then is easy to see that the days of being confined to a cubicle is pretty much over.
With remote access technology, we are now able to securely connect to computers and networks in a central office which means that you can do your work from anywhere in the world - and do it as if you were sitting at your desk. This offers great flexibility for staff and may just be the way forward for many work at home moms or people who have mobility impairments. The possibilities are much more far reaching though and in the near future we can probably all start working from home with "the office" being nothing more than a central computer system and a receptionist.
