How Return Addresses Make Postcard Printing More Effective

When coming up with your designs for postcard printing

, you might not put a lot of thought into using a return address. After all, postcards are designed to be disposable, so if a few get tossed out along the way, then its not worrisome, right? However, this one small design element could cost you money in the long run if it is not included.

Why you should include a return address

There are a few reasons why you should include a return address on your mailings. For starters, it can be an easy way to brand your postcard printing with your name and logo so that your readers will know exactly who sent it.

Return addresses are also encouraged by the Postal Service. With a return address, you can receive any undelivered pieces. This allows you to keep your mailing list up-to-date by eliminating those addresses that no longer exist. It will also allow you to receive forwarding addresses so that you can keep your mailing list current through this method as well.

Forwarding mail

In order to understand how return addresses are useful to postcard printing, you need to understand how the First Class Mail system works.

When you commission postcard printing and mail out your postcards using First Class Mail, the United States Postal Service will automatically forward the postcard for any address that has moved and submitted a Change of Address form in the last 12 months. After this 12 month time period has elapsed, the USPS will return the mail to you, along with the new address, for an additional 6 months. This will allow you to use your returned postcards to update your mailing list and keep it current.

Once the 18 month period has passed, or if your postcards are otherwise undeliverable, the USPS will return them to you along with why they were unable to be delivered. Including your return address in your postcard printing allows for this process to be completed. Otherwise, your postcards will simply be discarded.

Bulk Rates vs. First Class

You may consider using the Standard Bulk Rate to mail your postcard printing project. While this does allow you to save on the cost of postage, Bulk Mail will not be forwarded or returned if it is undeliverable. Instead, it will be discarded. The only exceptions are those pieces that are marked as Occupant/Exceptional Address or with an Ancillary Service Endorsement. Occupant/Exceptional Address postcards will be left at the address for the current occupant.

For ASE mail, you can mark it as Return Service Requested or Address Service Requested. For both of these services, you must have included your return address during your postcard printing. Postcards with Return Service Requested will be returned you with current address information. Address Service Requested will forward the postcard to the new address and allow you to receive a separate notice of the new address. Both of these will cause you to incur a fee on the pieces of mail that are either forwarded or returned.

What this means for you

As you can see, your return address should be included in your postcard printing to allow your company to receive the current address information of your customers and potential customers. By having the current address information, you will be able to keep in contact with your customers and make sure that they are informed about your business.
