How Security Tagging Complements The Security Camera In Catching Everyday Shoplifters

Many believe that the security camera is the only way to catch shoplifters

, but this is not actually true. Cameras most certainly provide several security advantages, but they cannot operate completely effectively in isolation. One method that enhances a system as a deterrent to shoplifters is security or retail tagging. Used in tandem with cameras, they can greatly increase the effectiveness of an overall security system on a retail premises. This aspect of a retail security system is not generally available as part of cctv camera kits, but they are considered to be as essential in the modern retailing world. Without doubt, cameras are the most important instore security items, and it is highly advisable that a sufficient number be positioned around the premises. Unfortunately, however, it can be difficult to catch a shoplifter at work clearly, and even if it does, the footage is not always spotted at the time. So often, footage is used as evidence, but only if the shoplifter is apprehended in the first place. And that is where security tagging comes into play, with a range of products designed to emit a signal at a set radio frequency that sets off an alarm when someone is exiting the premises without having had the security tag removed. A tag, however, is just one of several potential components to comprise the actual system. Tags and Labels As mentioned, tags are an essential part of the overall system. These are specially designed locking objects which emit the signal that sets off the alarm. However, the same job is done with adhesive labels too. The labels most commonly show a false barcode, making them seem part of the product. The most common form, however, are the hard plastic tags that are usually seen on clothing. These tags can come in various shapes and sizes, with the most plentiful being the UFO an clam tags, circular items that are bolted by a bar locked between the clothing material. Another common form is the stylus tag, which are often found on smaller or more delicate items, like two piece swimsuits and lingerie. Other styles exist to accommodate the more obscurely shaped items, such as glasses and bottles. However, regardless of the actual size or design of the tag, the purpose remains that same. In order to allow paying customers to exit the shop without the alarm sounding, the tags must be removed. Detachers and Deactivators There are only two ways to remove tags and labels, by way of detachers and deactivators. As the name suggests, the detachers are used to physically remove a tag by unlocking the short bar that joins the two sides. Deactivators, however, will deactivate the signal that a tag or label emits, ensuring that the alarm at the door will not go off. Of course, the tag is removed as well, but in the case of some stickers and false bar codes, they are not removed from the item. More often than not, deactivation is accomplished by use of a magnetic deactivator. These can be in the shape of a small box or a pad at the shop pay point. They sometimes make a high beep sound to indicate the signal has be deactivated, or sometimes a green light flashes. They are also available in mobile form, known as wands, for items that are too large to bring to the pay point, like televisions or refrigerators. RF Pillars The final piece of the puzzle is the RF pillar that stands at the entrance and exit ways of a retail premises. These are what read the tag signals, and which sound off the alarm if the tags passing through them have not been deactivated. Though they all tend to appear the same, the pillars can differ in capabilities, with some operating through just one signal frequency and others capable to reading several. While all of these retail tagging components are in use, the cameras positioned around the premises can continue to capture images of shoppers, and particularly shoplifters that may be operating. The images gathered by a security camera can then be used to prosecute those apprehended by security guards on the ground. Clearly, between cctv cameras and cctv camera kits, and the tagging technology that can complement them, protecting stock and property is now much more effective than in past generations.
