How Sedation Dentists Treat Patients Who Cannot Otherwise Be Treated
There are a number of dentists called sedation dentists that can provide patients with some type of sedation before they go through a dental procedure
. Sedation simply means that the patient has received some kind of pharmacological agent in order to help them relax. Sometimes, this can even mean that you are completely unconscious for the procedure.
In most cases, the dentist would prefer that the patient be awake for the procedure, but for those patients who cannot relax and are terrified of the procedures, the dentist may opt to use sedation to be able to work safely. This can be a major blessing for the patient however. Most people are scared to get dental work done, but a few people are so scared that they never actually get the procedure completed, even if it is necessary or even vital. Sedation is an option that more and more dentists have at their disposal.
Two different methods are usually employed by dentist to sedate patients, although they normally just use one at a time on a patient. The first method is known as the enteral route, which is a method of delivering the sedation medication, through the body and ending up in the digestion system. Usually this is through the mouth, but it may include other methods.
The more common method is through the parenteral routes, which can include several different ways of delivering the medication. For instance, if the dentist is using nitrous oxide, they may opt to have the patient inhale the sedation medication, but other methods that they sometimes use are intravenously, or intramuscular methods or even submucosal.
There are all kinds of different patients, and while not every one of them will require sedation in order to have the work done, some will be frightened of the procedure so much that such a drastic measure such as sedation is necessary. For those who cannot handle having the procedure done, or in the case of someone who is autistic or disabled, sedation dentistry may be the only option that they have in order to get work done that they desperately need.
Be aware that no matter how small, there is an element of danger in any kind of sedation. However, in general, sedation dentistry is very safe and dentists make sure that they know about pre-existing conditions that might cause complications. However, it is almost always very safe to have sedation dentistry done, as long as you make sure to notify your doctor if you have any heart or lung conditions.
As far as the cost goes, it does usually run a little higher to be sedated, in addition to whatever other procedures that you might have done, but the cost is certainly not prohibitive, and sometimes insurance will cover it. You will have to check with your insurance company for details, and ask your dentist beforehand about the cost of sedation.
However, if you feel unable to undergo the procedure without some kind of help, then sedation dentists do exist in most areas to help those patients.
