How Septic Tanks Work

A septic tank is a type of On Site Sewage Facility (OSSF) to residences not attached to public sewer pipelines

. Septic systems serve as sewage treatment systems in twenty five percent of the homes in North America.

How Septic Tanks Operate

The septic system is composed of a one thousand or two thousand gallons tank attached to a wastewater pipe on one end and a drainfield on the other end. Waste is removed from the home to the septic tank where it's sorted into solids and liquids. Heavy solids descend and produce a base sludge layer while unheavy solids rise and make a top layer of scum. The anaerobic bacterial environment that develops in the impervious tank dissolves both layers to sewage that is afterward released to a drain field, also known as a leachfield or a disposal field. The leach field refines sewage with a series of perforated pipes charging through subterranean dugouts full of gravel. As sewage drips out of the pipes, into the gravel and through the soil - filtration arises through which effluent is refined from unsafe substances and is channeled to neighborhood water sources as clean water.

Clues of Septic Tank Failure:

Slow drainage of showers, tubs and sinks, as well as poor flushing toilets

Repeated sewage backwashes

Sewer odors

Wastewater near septic tank

Septic Tank Maintenance

Periodic septic tank pump-out is crucial for scum and sludge ejection. The rate at which a person should pump out the septic tank is contingent with the original volume of the tank. Regular septic tank cleaning counteracts whichever of those complications already mentioned and prolongs the life of the system. Septic tank pumping is advised to hand over to specialized plumbers with the suitable equipment to drain tanks without damaging the device or surroundings. Septic tank check-ups can go a long way at identifying and repairing unnoticed impairments before they plug the system.
