How Should Data Recovery Software Be Supported

?

Anyone who owns a computer has invariably downloaded or purchased software to optimize its performance. Most machines are bought with an operating system, a few utilities and some games. It may also come with trial versions of various genres of software applications. Office productivity suites, photo manipulation software and computer maintenance programs are among the many trial software programs that may be installed or available. After the trial period is over, the user may need to purchase and/or register the software to continue using the software. Conversely, some software will allow the user to continue to use it after the trial period, but with decreased or limited functionality. In either case, the trial version gives the potential buyer time to use the software and decide whether it will be useful for their applications.

Support options for the newly purchased software may also have many variations. There is a growing trend in which the end user is given only self-support options, such as forums or online FAQs. Additionally, a manual or user guide might be offered for download. There has also been a growing trend that personal support from a live person is also available, but at an additional cost. This is quite prevalent in the area of critical use software, such as anti-virus programs and system utilities. Some companies even charge an ongoing annual subscription fee, relying on the premise that a user will eventually need more assistance later.

In some forms of critical use software, however, there should be manufacturer-based support available. Good technical support can often mean the difference between success and failure. One type of software, for example, would be data recovery software. Because of the differences between the various operating systems and computer types, tech support must be able to guide the user through the process that applies to their machine.

For example, a Windows-based PC uses file structures and formats that are unique to that operating system. Therefore, the data recovery technician must have expertise in Windows. There are formats and file structures that differ from version to version, also. Furthermore, a data recovery Macintosh technician must be qualified to lead the customer through the Mac file recovery process with the operating system that is installed.

The bottom line is that the value of a software program is not only determined by the initial cost. Along with the functionality and suitability of the program itself, continued tech support should also be a consideration. Quality technical support is often offered through a variety of means, such as:

Online FAQs

Community forums, with assistance from fellow users
