How Simply Changing Your Putting Grip Can Shave Up To 9 Strokes Off Your Golf Game

How you hold the putter in your hands is such an important factor when it comes to putting the ball successfully into the hole

. In fact, by slightly altering your putting grip, you can reduce your overall score of up to 9 strokes right away. Now before you think I have lost my mind (since cutting your score by 9 strokes seems impossible), let me explain. Making this kind of improvement means that you are taking just one fewer putt out of every two holes. This is definitely doable when you realize how critical your grip can be when putting.

Most golfers tend to stick to the grip that they were initially shown. For many, it's the standard top pinkie finger interlocking with the bottom index finger. And although this grip may work for well enough, there may be other possible grips that can actually give you the additional stability and accuracy to improve your chances of sinking the golf ball in fewer strokes. Why do so many golfers stick to the old standard grip? Because it works (when done correctly). But everyone is different, and you may find that a slight change in your grip would work better for you.

The first thing that you should do is to try a variety of different putting grips. Besides the standard putting grip, a number of other grips are used including:

1. The Box Grip. In this grip, your hands wrap around the putter at the same location, so your hands are one on top of the other. This is popular because it forces you to keep your shoulders even, and thus improving putting accuracy.

2. The Baseball Grip. As the name implies, this grip is identical to the grip used by a baseball player holding a bat. Many golfers like this grip because it feels more natural and comfortable to them.

3. The Overlapping Grip. This grip is very similar to the standard putting grip except that instead of interlocking fingers, you will be placing the pinkie finger of your bottom hand over the index finger of your top hand.

These are just a few of the putting grips being used by professional and amateur golfers. There are plenty of others to choose from. Once you are familiar with about 5 grips, I suggest that you do the following exercise:

- take your favorite putter, a pen, and a piece of paper to a putting green.

- using your normal putting grip, write down on the piece of paper how many strokes it takes to get the ball in the hole from 5 feet away, 10 feet away, and 20 feet away.

- next, pick one new putting grip, and again document how many strokes it takes to sink the ball from the 3 mentioned distances

- repeat the process for all of the putting grips that you have learned about

- analyze the results

You may be surprised to see that one or two of the grips gave you drastic improvement over your normal grip. If you find this to be the case, go back to the putting green and re-test yourself. If you see similar results, congratulations! You have just discovered a putting grip that can shave 5-10 strokes off of your typical golf score. If you don't see any improvement with one of these new grips, then at least feel confident that you are already using the best possible grip for you. Now its time to work on a different part of your golf game.
