How Sinusitis Compounding Pharmacy Came To Be And What It Has Produced So Far

Before penicillin was invented and aggressive production and marketing of pharmaceutical

products emerged, the primary role of pharmacists was to produce drugs from several different compounds thus the term 'compounding' according to the specifications of physicians. They virtually created drugs from basic materials and formulated these to the exact needs of patients. Until several years ago, this was the norm.

Recently, the failure of common drugs to provide long-term relief for sinusitis symptoms and the need for highly specialized drugs for the treatment of sinusitis and other conditions have forced medical communities to tap the science of compounding pharmacy to create more effective, alternative medications.

Compounding pharmacy has a very long history of existence - from the hunting-gathering communities of our evolutionary past to the industrial revolution of the early 20th century. It started in the humble laboratories of early herbalists, apothecaries, toxicologists, and druggists from where treatments for common colds, influenza and other respiratory conditions emerged and later evolved into the sophisticated philosophical science of alchemy. It later saw developments that had catapulted the production of crude drugs and the very first antibacterial sulfonamides, the agents from where later groups of drugs emerged.

By the time modern pharmaceutical and drug companies entered the scene, compounding pharmacies have declined in popularity and use. It was only a matter of time when mass-producing pharmacies came of age and compounding pharmacies lost their appeal.

But the science of combining various ingredients to produce medications for patients with unique needs was not totally forgotten. Since 2000, after a research study conducted by a group of researchers at Stanford School of Medicine, compounding pharmacies have found their uses again in the area of producing newer treatments for sinusitis. Nowadays, it is not uncommon to find a compounding pharmacy that is focused in the creation and testing of innovative treatments for sinusitis.

Some of the newly developed treatments in the field of sinusitis compounding pharmacy so far are focused on creating alternative methods of administering medications. A perfect example is the nebulized antibiotics, which unlike oral antibiotics, deliver medicated mist directly to the nasal passages via a nebulizer, the same tool that is used by asthma patients.

This method produces more immediate effects on the tissues of the sinuses as it directly distributes the aerosolized medication to the nasal cavity as opposed to the route taken by oral pills the bloodstream. Symptoms like headaches, facial pain, and nasal congestion are easily relieved with nebulizers.

Current results obtained by administering nebulized antibiotics are promising and often indicate positive results. Patients report of immediate symptom relief and easier symptom management. Like most antibiotics though, side-effects are to be expected. Different people react to medications differently and no one medication is fail-safe. Like your ordinary oral antibiotics, you can expect to experience side-effects like resistance to antibiotics, allergic reactions, mild diarrhea, and other mild side-effects.

Apparently, nebulized antibiotic is just the sampler offered by sinusitis compounding pharmacy. Other innovative treatments for sinus infections are expected to develop in the years to come.
