How Spyware Works
Do you know what spyware is? If you are a PC user, chances are that you have heard this name time and again. You may have heard that spyware infect the hard disk, and slow down PC, or erase vital data. But do you know what it really is? Read on to find out.
First off, spyware and computer viruses are not the same things. Computer viruses, except for the most dangerous ones, are mostly pranks. Nasty pranks, yes, but these are still pranks nonetheless. Spyware, on the other hand, is seldom innocent. It is designed to make money for the creator, plain and simple. A spyware is a small malicious program that gets attached to one or more of the core files of your operating system. It gets loaded into memory whenever you boot up your PC, and then sits in the background, doing what it was meant to do.
So, what is a spyware designed to do? Typically, spyware programs display advertisements, and lots of it. Whenever you connect to the internet, spyware programs start displaying advertisements in the form of pop up windows. These programs are capable of displaying as many as 10-15 pop ups at any given moment. If you click on any one of the pop ups, then the program quickly opens a web page before you realize your mistake. This page usually contains detailed information about the product, which was featured in the pop up window. Whenever this web page is displayed, the creator of the spyware can track it and show the report to the company which produced the item featured in the web page, thereby making some cash. However, this type of spyware usually does little actual harm other than being simply annoying.
There is another, more dangerous form of spyware. This type of spyware runs in the background and keeps track of keystrokes that you make. Let us suppose, you are accessing your e-mail. Whenever you type in your username and password, the spyware program will track both and keep a record of those. At the end of the day, the spyware will e-mail this information, using your internet connection, to its creator. Now, the creator of the spyware will have your e-mail ID, and password, providing him with unrestricted access to your contact list. Next thing you know, your friends will complain that they are getting spam e-mails from your e-mail account, when in fact you are innocent.
Spyware programs are much more malicious in action than even computer viruses. To keep these at bay, install a good spyware blocker in your PC, and Ad blockers in your web browser. Keep these tools updated regularly to keep spyware away from your PC.
