How T-shirts Became A Closet Staple And A Marketing Tool

T-shirts are forever - that's a bold fashion prediction!

These casuals will forever and ever be an essential part of human life if fashion specialists and marketing leaders will have their way, which they most probably will.

From merely being undergarments in the 19th century, these ubiquitous pieces of upper garments have risen from the ranks to being a primary marketing tool for many companies.

So how did these shirts rise from being lowly underwears to outer garments? From being unmentionables to being the lead star of the entire wardrobe?

T-shirts resulted from splitting union suits into separate tops and bottoms. The early renditions of these favorite tops were of a length just enough to be inserted underneath the waistband of the bottoms.

During the late 1800s, these tops, whether or not with buttons, were the garb of choice by miners and dockers. Mostly, they were worn as covering due to the scorching hot working environment.

The button-less versions became popular in the U.S., especially the crew-necked, short-sleeved white cotton shirts. These kinds became standard issue by the U.S. Navy during the Spanish American War.

The lead of the miners, dock workers, and the Navy men were eventually followed by workers from other sectors, including those who are stationed in ranches and other farming related industries. They liked how the affordable t-shirts were easily fitted and cleaned.

The long and short of it is that t-shirts subsequently became a staple in everybody's closet. The 1980s saw the growth of these casual tops as a tool for personal expression. In the UK, for example, large slogans printed on the front or the back were all the craze.

It was during the 1970s that screen printed versions began making the crossover from simple everyday clothes to marketing tools. By the 1990s, even corporate messages were imprinted on these tops.

With fashion becoming more fierce, and marketing more cutthroat, expect t-shirts to be that the front, back and center of growth in these two industries.

T-shirts are the solution if you have something to sell but still want to make a fierce fashion statement.
