How Tamsulosin Treats Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Men who are having difficulty urinating due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) may find treatment with Tamsulosin. The drug blocks the alpha adrenergic nerves to relax the muscle cells for easy urination.
Men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate need can improve their urination by taking Tamsulosin. The drug belongs in the class called alpha-adrenergic blockers. One cause of BPH is difficulty in urinating. The tube which carries urine from the men's bladder to their penis travels through the prostate gland. As men grow older, enlargement of prostate gland occurs resulting to the tightening of muscle cells within the neck of the bladder and the prostate gland. Obstruction of the flow of urine occurs due to prostate enlargement and tightening of muscles.
Mechanism of Action:
Tamsulosin, which goes by its retail name Flomax, blocks the effects of the chemical related to epinephrine that is released by the alpha adrenergic nerves to tighten muscle cells. Tamsulosin blocks this chemical to relax the muscle cells and thus, decreasing the obstruction and improving the flow of urine.
There are also other drugs that block alpha adrenergic nerves, including prazosin, doxazosin, alfuzosin and terazosin. However, it has been proven that this drug is active against alpha adrenergic nerves of the bladder neck and prostate compared with other drugs. You can start Tamsulosin therapy at an optimum dose.
What You Should Know Before Taking Tamsulosin:
Tamsulosin should not be used if you are allergic to the drug. It is not also advisable to combine this medication with other drugs such as alfuzosin, prazosin, doxazosin, terazosin and silodosin. Special tests or dose adjustment may be required if you have a history of prostate cancer and plans to take Tamsulosin. If you are going to have a cataract surgery, tell your doctor ahead of time since this medication can affect your pupils.
Fainting or dizziness is one of the common side effects of Tamsulosin. You should avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise or stand for long periods of time. If for one reason or another you decide to stop taking Tamsulosin, you should inform your doctor before doing so as well as before starting to take it again.
