This type of price competition has helped a number of smaller companies increase their revenue, because shoppers are now turning to the stores which offer discounts on the same products. It is giving the little guys the chance to compete with the bigger markets which tend to dominate the market.
Coupons no longer hold the stigma of only being for those who are cheap, or tightwads. They are now appealing to all different kinds of Americans, looking to come out of this economic crisis unscathed.
Though there was a previous fifteen year decline in the use of commercial discounts, in the past four years there have been 2.6 billion manufacturer's coupons redeemed. These numbers have only continued to grow, with store discounts from stores such as Wal-Mart and Target increasing by eleven percent.
As this increase has become more and more popular, companies have the luxury of putting more restrictions on the offers they are allowing for the public. This could be making the expiration date sooner than before, or making more purchase requirements.
This keeps the situation a win-win for both consumers and producers. More and more growth is anticipated by companies, as more Americans become comfortable with the idea of using cut-out or printable discounts.
This behavioral change in society could even have lasting effects. As people shift their buying plans, and find that they are enjoying the benefits of this, this pattern will most likely be continued even as the economy begins to climb back up to more fruitful times.
For marketers, it is an opportunity to bring in more customers and get them to try new things. Companies suggest that shoppers check their websites regularly for promotional offers, and sift through the mail clippers which come weekly.
