How The Pyramids Were Built

For anyone who has ever seen the great pyramids of Egypt in person

, the imagined task of building such a structure today, let alone thousands of years ago must seem utterly mind boggling. Perhaps that is why there is so much controversy and discussion about how they were built. Was it some lost ancient technology, the influence of alien visitors, the work of an army of slave labor, or something more mundane? The sheer size and scope of this project seem almost insurmountable for the time, so how did they do it? Read on to find out.

The Secret

While it is not very glamorous, the truth is that the ancient Egyptians used a combination of time and hard work to build the pyramids. Humans a very ingenious creatures, and when up against a task can be very cunning indeed. And what is more, they did not even use slaves as many have suggested. So now the secret is out, let us break down exactly how these builders of old cut, moved, and stacked multi ton blocks without modern mechanical machinery.

Quarrying

The inside of the pyramids are made of lower quality and softer limestone, while the outer layers are composed of harder, smoother, and whiter limestone. This limestone was mined from quarries miles away using simple tools and methods. There is evidence that they used copper tools to cut the softer stones and a material known as dolerite to cut the harder ones. The process would involve 60 or 70 workers cutting away the rock around the block. They would cut slots underneath it and jam wooden sticks into them. Then, they would pour water into the slots, causing the wood to soak it up and expand, thus cracking the stone. The stone would then be moved by teams of men or beasts with ropes and a greased path down to a ship. The ship would take the stones to the building site.

Placing the Stones

The stones would be offloaded from the ship and pulled along a greased path to the pyramid. There it would be pulled up ramps made out of compacted and hardened earth. The ramp would be gradually raised as the project went on so that the top could be reached. This method of construction would take about 20,000 to 30,000 laborers working for about 24 years. Because of this time frame, most pharaohs would begin work on their pyramid as soon as they took the throne.

So as you can see, we do not need outlandish explanations and visits by aliens to explain these great construction projects of the ancient world. We just need to do a little research and understand that humans can accomplish great things when they work together and put their minds to it. Still, I bet those workers wish they had diesel generators or gas generators to help with some of the heavy lifting, or at least for a little air conditioning.
