How The Recession Can Help You Lose Weight
The other day I bumped into an old friend who I havent seen in quite a while and we decided to go for a coffee together
. I noticed that she had lost quite a bit of weight and looked fantastic. In fact, I dont think I can ever recall her looking as well as she does. We began chatting over coffee as old friends do and it was then that she told me that about six months previously she had lost her job in banking due to the effects of the credit crunch and the recession.
I started saying how sorry I felt for her and how terrible and stressful it all must be but then she completely stopped me in my tracks by telling me that the recession had really given her a positive outlook on life. I thought I needed to know more about this so I asked her exactly what she meant. She went on to explain that before the recession, she used to buy pretty much what she wanted, when she wanted without even thinking about the consequences, often just sticking the purchases on her credit card. I still didnt understand! So whats happened thats so positive I asked?
Well she replied once I lost my job, I could no longer afford to spend carelessly and although I felt miserable at first, I soon began to realise that I was spending stupid amounts of money on things I didnt really need. I had actually been spending to try and make me feel happier but really it was making me more miserable. I had gotten into a vicious circle without even realising it. She went on to explain that sometimes we need a wake-up call to show us whats really happening to us.
Then I mentioned that shed lost a lot of weight and looked great and she to my amazement she said she had the credit crunch to thank for that as well. I had to know so I asked her how this was so and she said that losing her job had made her realise how much she was spending on snack foods and ready -made meals. When she started to think about it she realised that she was spending money again on things she didnt need and that were making her unhappy by contributing to her weight problem.
I decided to write this article because I think this is a great story that we can all learn from and I believe there are lessons within it that we can all learn from. My friend was shocked into action by something she had no control over but rather than burying her head in the sand she faced up to her problems and turned the negative into a positive. Sometimes we all need a kick up the backside to remind us that we are in control of our own destiny. I suppose its like the old saying if you do what youve always done, youll get what you always got. In other words if you want things to be different, you have to do something different.
