How The Willys Jeep Changed The 4x4 Landscape.
Jeep vehicles have been in existence for over 70 years
. The name of this trendsetting 4x4 is rumoured to have originated from the abbreviation for Government Purpose, GP. Some experts think that It could have derived from the abbreviation for General Purpose. Either way, it seems that troops eventually started pronouncing GP, as Jeep. In 1943, one of the companies that manufactured Jeep vehicles, Willys Overland, applied to have the name registered as a trademark brand name. This application was approved in 1950, and so Willys Overland became the owners of the brand name. These were therefore among the first companies, granted the right to manufacture vehicles under the brand name. Although an authorized trademark, the term jeep can also be used to describe 4x4 vehicles similar in design, inspired by the original Jeep.
The iconic vehicle was designed and developed specifically for use in World War II in 1941. As it became evident that America would need to join the War, the U.S government approached several companies to design and possibly manufacture a 4x4 that could be used in the war. This vehicle needed to be extremely tough and powerful, also to be able to deal with unpredictable European terrain. Because the army only gave companies 49 the future up with a working prototype, there seemed to be only a few firms that responded within the bid. In the end, a functioning prototype was submitted from the American Bantam Car Company. After stringent testing, the army was very pleased with the specifications of the vehicle and were pleased with everything however the engine. They felt that the engine did not have enough grunt. The Bantam Car Company also seemed too small to be able to produce the amount of vehicles the Army would want. It was decided that some of the bigger car companies, namely Ford and Willys Overland could be included to make the Jeeps. They were also given a bit of leeway with regards to making small changes and modifications within the original design. Willys Overland submitted the best design, and this model, the model MB, would be the standard template which all Jeeps could be manufactured during the war. Because the Army needed a lot of vehicles in a very short time, other manufacturers were also permitted to produce vehicles using the Willys design.
