Urbanites live a life of stress, it goes with the territory

People who work are particularly exposed to stress, weaving through the city traffic on the way to work and back alone can be highly stressful, add to that the usual job-related pressure, family matters and just keeping up with the fast - paced urban lifestyle on a day to day basis. No wonder many of them suffer all sorts of health problems with stress as the main culprit.

Stress is such a commonly used term. Technically speaking, it refers to the feeling created when we react to certain events or situations. Stress is actually the body's natural reaction to a challenge preparing itself for a tough situation with heightened awareness, focus, strength and stamina.

Stressors are events that cause feelings of stress and can be categorized in many ways. A stressor can be present in almost every situation, from the outright physical danger involved during a hostage situation, to the nervousness triggered by having to make an important presentation or the dread of having to attend a semester long advanced math class.

A person who becomes too stressed out will most likely suffer from health complications sooner or later. Although the link between certain health problems and stress is not quite clear, there is a common belief that a life free of stress allows one to become healthier and more focused.


It is therefore important to strike a balance between the demands of home and work. The following are tips to help you achieve it.

Practice time management - Organize your tasks at home and at work so that confusion won't get stirred up between the two. Managing your time well is an important key in ensuring efficiency.

Get enough sleep - Do not deprive yourself of sleep. It is when you sleep that your body becomes recharged preparing it for the challenges of the following day. When you lack sleep you experience physical and mental strain and have a difficult time concentrating.


Set your priorities - It is important to know both your potential and your limitations. There are things that you would be able to do without much difficulty and others where you might encounter problems. With an awareness of these you can properly set your priorities. Knowing what these are will help you stay focused and on track even when things get complicated or mixed up.

Stay in touch with your social group - Friends are important because they provide support and understanding. Being with friends can be a great stress reliever especially if you spend the time engaging in a recreational activity.

If you have a healthy work-life balance you would be a healthier, happier and perhaps even younger looking person. These tips are meant to help you achieve that sense of equilibrium that all of us need to remain sane as we move about in this highly stressful world we live in.
