How To Achieve Your Triathlon Goals
Writing your goals on paper is a powerful way to make sure you achieve your targets
. Before I completed in my first triathlon, I had written it down as one of my goals and I also made it a point to share some of these goals with my friends and then as if by magic I was invited to register for my first event. Once you spend some money on the registration fee and have a date in the calendar, you will instantly become more motivated as you will have something to work towards.
Find friends who also share the same interest to complete a triathlon. It will make training more fun and you can also hold each other accountable, like making sure you turn up for an early morning swim session. Joining a local swim or specialist triathlon club will help you maintain your focus and keep you on track to reach your goals.
The swim section of the triathlon is often the most difficult part for new triathletes. To help become more competent in this area of the race, try training with a swimmer who is at an advanced level to learn extra tips. Visualize the race day and picture yourself exiting the water. During my first race, I had a big smile exiting the water after 750m, because I knew once I had finished the swim, the rest of the race would fall into place. I also hired a swim coach, just for a couple of session to improve my technique. Getting into a regular routine of heading to the pool to do lengths is part of the hard work and persistence required to succeed as a triathlete, but even more important during the swim is technique. Your strokes need to be long, smooth, relaxed and your body straight in the water. This makes your swim more efficient and saves you energy for the cycle and run disciplines.
Set yourself training goals and be prepared to be flexible. When I was training for an Olympic distance swim covering 1,500m, I spent more time in the outdoor pool, getting used to putting on a wetsuit and covering longer distances. If your race is in an open water lake or sea, try to get some practice in a similar environment, as your body will thank you come race day.
In summary, to help stay motivated:
1.Set yourself goals
2.Write them down
3.Enroll and register for a triathlon
4.Seek support and find a training buddy
5.Visualize your winning mentality on race day
6.Have fun and enjoy yourself!
