How To Achieve a Perfect Baseball Game

Major League Baseball defines a perfect game in baseball as a game where no player from each opposing team reaches a pitch. One or more pitchers should also be able to pitch victory that will last a minimum of nine innings. The pitcher is accredited as the one who "throws the perfect game". The pitcher should toss a no-hitter, should not walk or hit a batter and no batter throughout the game should reach first base even on an error.

What Are the Odds?

A perfect game baseball is very rare and ever since the inception of professional teams in the late 1800's, only 20 perfect games have been recorded. More people have gone to outer space than pitched perfect games in Major League Baseball history. The first major league perfect game occurred in 1880 and the second came five days after. These were the only perfect games in the "pre-modern era" of baseball.

In 1991, the official Major League Baseball definition of a perfect game baseball was formalized. A perfect game was easier to achieve before this formal definition, it only had to last the full nine innings. The formal definition states that it should be both a shutout and a no-hitter.

How Significant is Pitch Control?

The batter can still reach first base by a walk or error during a no-hitter so not all no-hitters can be perfect games. Perfect game baseball is not solely on the hands of the pitcher but teamwork and great field play is also vital. All the members of the team need to give their best and be careful in order to prevent errors that could ruin a perfect game.

Pitch control is the most important factor in achieving a perfect game. The pitcher should be able to control his pitches and be able to make the ball go where he wants it to go. The main purpose is to confuse the batter and even if he hits the ball, it will be either be a no-hit, a weak grounder or a pop fly that will not ruin the perfect game baseball. Based on the history of Major League Baseball, most perfect game pitchers had an average of 100 pitches per game or 3.7 pitches per batter.

The Most Legendary Perfect Game

One of the most famous perfect games is Game 5 of the 1956 World Series where the Brooklyn Dodgers played against the New York Yankees. This is still one of the most talked about perfect games in the history of Major League Baseball. New York Yankee pitcher Don Larsen made baseball history by throwing the only perfect game in World Series history.

It was so surprising since Larsen wasn't performing so well during the first part of the World Series that year. During Game 5 he was able to pitch seven strikeouts and help the New York Yankees win seven games in the 1956 World Series.

Several factors are important to achieve a perfect game in baseball. The most important factors are a great performance by a pitcher, great teamwork and field play, and a little luck. Great teamwork and field play are important and can save a perfect game. In Larsen's historical World Series game, Mickey Mantle saved the game through an incredible over the shoulder catch.
