How To Add Extra Flare To Your Home

We've all had those times when visiting a family member or going to a party--we've

been driving through a recent housing development and found ourselves thinking, "All these houses are exactly the same. How can the people that live here tell the difference?"

Every house needs to reflect the style and personality of its inhabitants, regardless of whether or not it is in a standardized development. If you are wondering what extra touches you can add to truly make your home stand out, then read on for some of my suggestions.

Take a look at your doorknobs as well as the knobs and handles on cupboards, dressers, and other storage areas. It is simple enough to browse your local hardware store or surf the internet to find a locksmith that specializes in unique or antique knobs and handles.

These details might seem so simple that they will just be overlooked, but think about how many knobs and handles there are across your house! They can truly contribute to the overall ambiance of your home.

The same is true of your light fixtures, along with your ceiling fans. In your living room or den, an oversized ceiling fan with a classic look can be absolutely striking. Plus, many ceiling fans have blades that can be reversed to show a different color, making an entirely different look whenever you so desire.

Rustic wall sconces, particularly in a living room or dining room, can make your home feel like an old-fashioned hunting lodge or log cabin--or even a castle, if you choose the right ones. Or, through careful selecting, you can give your home a sleek, modern feel. It's all up to you!

Study your walls next. Too many homeowners are afraid of color, and I understand that it can be easier to change other decorations when the walls are a neutral color, but I promise you that visitors to your home will be more likely to remember vibrant colors and unique designs.

If you feel nervous about it at first, you might add an accent wall to one or two rooms--or try having some fun. To a child's room, you could add polka dots or stripes. There are tools at your neighborhood home improvement store to help you add such fun and funky designs. Don't be afraid to use them!

Get creative any way you possibly can. After seeing the possibilities at a home decor shop, my cousin built a frame for his television--a frame like one you would see on a beautiful piece of artwork. It always catches guests' attention because it is so unique.

Make your home your own. Mix and match styles when you so desire instead of trying to mimic one in particular.
