How To Affix Vinyl Signs

Displaying vinyl signs is a helpful idea to get people where they need to go and give them the information they need once they arrive

. The vinyl lettering can be purchased through an online sign company, then applied to glass or other surfaces once it is shipped to the customer. In some cases, the vinyl signs are applied to another surface, such as a metal square background, and hung up on a wall or signpost. Applying vinyl lettering can be tricky, which is why it is often left to the professionals. When this is not possible, there are few tips that can be followed to improve the look and length of time the lettering will adhere to the surface.

Surface

Vinyl should be applied to a clean, dry surface. Although vinyl-backed letters stick to surfaces more easily than regular masking or scotch tape, it does not stick to everything. Avoid applying it to surfaces that are always moist, like organics or foam. Some porous materials are not meant for adhesion. Neither are extreme temperatures. Best results are found with clean metal, glass, smooth painted surfaces and special banner materials.

Cleaning

Hard surfaces, such as glass and metal, should be cleaned before anything is applied. Any dirt, dust and film must be removed before it can be applied. Use a special cleaner for those surfaces or, for glass and bare metal, rubbing alcohol is suitable. Make sure the area that will hold the sign is free of fibers and moisture before beginning the task of putting on the letters. Any old signs or letters should be removed before attempting to add new ones. They can be scraped off with a spatula or putty knife.

Method

Once the exact location of the sign has been determined and the surface has been prepared, it is time for installation. The vinyl lettering likely has a piece of backing on one side of the letters and a piece of painter's mask on the other. It resembles masking tape, but it is less sticky. If the mask is not present, it can be applied before putting up the sign. With the hand or forearm placed through the roll's interior, grasp the other side of the mask. Starting on the side closest to the grasping hand, gently lay down the mask in a straight line. Use the bare hand behind it to gently smooth out any wrinkles. Start at the center and follow the roll, rubbing the mask to the surface. Cut off the mask roll end with scissors once it extends several inches over the edge of the lettering. Use a plastic paddle to push out all air bubbles from the surface. Make sure the mask is securely in place on the lettering.

Lightly place a few pieces of regular masking tape on the top of the section of lettering to temporarily attach it to the wall. Make sure it is even. Use a ruler if necessary. Gently peel off the backing from the letters and smooth the lettering from center out and top to bottom. For long vinyl signs, this can be done by cutting a long piece into a few vertical sections with scissors while the signage is tacked to the wall with masking tape.

Air

Burnish, or rub back and forth over the area, with a plastic paddle until all traces of air are pushed out from under the mask and letters. Once this is complete, the mask can be slowly removed from one end of the lettering to the other. Hold the hand pulling back the mask close to the wall or surface as possible for best results.
