How To Afford A Luxury Car On A Budget
Whilst the majority of car users would love to drive around in an Aston Martin
, Bentley or BMW, the common belief is that not everyone can afford them.
And although this may be true to an extent, with just a little planning and thought, there's a good chance you'll be able to afford more of a luxurious car than you may first think and these 4 steps show just how you can do it.
1. Always buy second hand - it's common knowledge that as soon as you drive a brand new car off a dealer's forecourt, the car's value instantly decreases (sometimes by a staggering amount) and with almost all models and manufacturers susceptible to this, it's only the highest end of the market that isn't.
As this is apparent, it's important that if you want luxury on a budget, you buy second hand.
It's understandable if you initially think that a second hand car means you're going to have to purchase a vehicle that will have things wrong with it or which will be in a poor condition aesthetically.
What you have to keep in mind, though, is that if you're buying a luxury car, chances are the owner before you was doing the same and just like you, they'll have bought it to keep it in the best condition possible, meaning that aside from some minor wear and tear, you're likely to be able to purchase a fantastic looking luxury car at a heavily reduced price.
2. Go retro - enter BMW dealers today and you'll be given the opportunity to buy a car with so many additional features you won't know what you're doing with them all.
Wind back two or three decades and enter BMW dealers in the 1970s or 80s, however and you'll have been given a selection of luxury extras that were perfect - enough to make you feel like you were driving a high class car but not too many that you didn't know what to do with them.
Although you might find it a little difficult to get the exact things you want in a car that's twenty or thirty years old, if you look around you should be able to benefit from aspects such as electric heated seats and in a lot of cases, air conditioning (surprisingly, air conditioning systems in cars have been around since 1939).
3. Remember that you can add things - buy a new luxury car today and it would be surprising if it didn't have a satellite navigation system already installed.
Go back even just 10 years and it's more of a rarity to see cars fitted with them as a standard.
Try and not dwell on this too much, however, as a lot of today's standard features can be installed into new cars, even down to heated massage seats or climate control.
4. Don't forget the additional costs - when buying a new car, you have to think of the additional costs that are involved with owning it in a negative way, as things like vehicle tax and maintenance are likely to be high.
In older cars, however, it's often the opposite. Vehicle tax a car registered before 1 March 2001 and which has an engine smaller than a 1.6, for example, is just 125 pounds for twelve months. And remember that a lot of problems with new cars are electrical - buy a luxury car that's at least twenty years old and whilst it will still have some electronic parts, they will be substantially less than if you bought a new car today, generally meaning repairs are a lot more straightforward.
