How To Be A Friend Others Would Like To Have
Are you the kind of person that other people would really
, really like to have as a friend? If you're not yet that person, you can be if you just learn a few key skills. Being a great friend means you'll have deeper relationships in your life and a richer social circle.
How do you be a friend that others would like to have?
==> Accept and Genuinely Like the People in Your Life
When someone really likes you, you can tell. Other people can as well.
Of course, you can be friends with people that you don't fully accept. You might disagree with an opinion or two, or there might be a couple traits that you don't quite appreciate about them.
However, the more you genuinely like someone and the more they genuinely like you, the better the chances of the two of you becoming good friends.
==> Learn to Listen
Listening is one of the most important skills when it comes to relationships. Most of us are much more inclined to talking, but what builds relationships is really listening.
When you listen to other people, they feel like you're getting to know them. They feel like you care. They feel that they're important to you.
Practice listening. Ask questions and hear what the other person is saying. Listen to their body language and tone as well to hear the message under the message.
A friend who listens is a friend who's valued.
==> Stand for Your Friends
If your friend called you at 3am in the morning because they had a flat tire, would you jump out of bed to go pick them up?
If you heard someone saying negative things about your friends at a party, would you defend your friend on their behalf?
If you're someone who stands for their friends, people can tell. Even if they weren't there at that part, they'll get that sense that you're the kind of person who "has their back."
That's the kind of person people want as friends.
==> Be Honest
Never lie to friends. Lying destroys trust and damages friendships.
However, being honest is more than just not lying. Being honest means making it a priority to say the truth and have the other person say the truth.
That means if you're angry about something, rather than just letting it sit unsaid, you'll bring it up so it can be addressed. If there's something that's straining the relationship, you're willing to bring it up rather than take the more convenient route of non-action.
Tell the truth, even when you can't see the benefit of doing so in the short term. Once people realize that you're the kind of person who tells the truth, they're going to be much more drawn to you as a friend.
These are some of the most important characteristics of great friends. Remember, these traits aren't developed overnight and it may take some time for others to recognize these traits in you. In the long run however, by developing these traits you'll greatly improve your friendships and relationships.
