How To Be A Home Plumber

When you get a clogged sink or have septic problems in your home

, are you one of those people who automatically reach for the phone and call the plumber? If you do, you may like to learn how you can save money and time by fixing these problems yourself. All it takes is a little bit of knowledge and a few easy to use tools.

Tools You Will Need

Every home plumber needs a few tools that will take care of many of the common problems you will experience. First, and most important, you will need a good quality plunger. These come in a variety of different sizes, but if you only purchase one, go for the best quality toilet that can be used to plunge out sinks and toilets. Another great item you should have in your plumbing toolbox is a plumbing snake. These snakes can be used to loosen up any clogs in a toilet, sink, bathtub or sewer line, and work wonderfully for items that a plunger may not be able to loosen. You should also have some plumber's putty and sealant in your toolkit. These can be used for leaks that may occur in your pipes. Lastly, you will need a large adjustable wrench. The wrench can be used to tighten any fittings that may come loose and cause a leak under your sink.

How to Use Your Tools Properly

Having the correct tools won't do you any good unless you know how to use them and what they should be used for. Knowing how to use the above tools will allow you to clear almost any clog.

PLUNGER- To use this properly, you will place the plunger over the drain hole in your sink, toilet or bathtub. Since plungers need suction to work properly, you will need to make sure there is a good seal around the drain to get the best results. To get a good seal, your plunger should be covered with water. Add more water if there isn't enough. When you press down, you will feel some pressure, and then when the plunger moves back up, this gives the suctioning effect you need to unclog your pipe.

PLUMBING SNAKE- If your plunger cannot clear the clog, using a plumbing snake may be able to work better. To use the plumbing snake, you will begin working one end into the tub, toilet or sink drain. Because of its flexibility, it will easily work through the twists and turns of your pipes until you reach the clog. When the snake reaches the clog, begin to push and twist until you can poke through the debris. The water should now drain out of the clogged pipe. Once you have the clog worked loose, you can then either use a plunger or hot water to clean the rest of the gunk out.

SEALANT AND PLUMBER'S PUTTY-These two items work best to fix noticeable leaks in your sink pipes. Use the plumbers putty around joints that are leaking. If this doesn't work, use the wrench to remove the pipes, and after cleaning them, add new sealant and reattach.

It really is easy to be a home plumber! Just a bit of knowledge and the right tools will aid you in becoming a do-it-yourselfer!
