The Fun, The Freedom, The AwesomenessBeing a Video Game Tester

Its 1985, your pants are puffy, your hair is spiky, your hat is flipped backwards, and you heart Regan, but what you really want is that brand new magic little box made by Nintendo- the Original Nintendo console. When the console hit the shelves you almost fainted with excitement. You snatched up the last box, ran home, plugged it in, inserted the Super Mario Bros. game and spent the next 2 months playing until your fingers went numb.

If the above story is like reading a chapter from your childhood, then you might be the right candidate for being a video game tester.

More Than Fun and Games

Being a video game tester isn't just hours of gaming for money. It actually takes some skill and education in order to perform the job properly. If you really want a game tester job you need to consider majoring in a computer science, such as: computer programming, computer engineering, or even video game design. With a B.S. in a computer science field, your resume will carry a little more weight than if your only education experience is 2 semesters in community college taking The Fundamentals of Pre Columbian History.

After the degree comes the work experience. Believe it or not, being a video game tester is not an entry level position; you have to work up to it. That means that you should be setting your sights on the small time online games produced en masse as applications for social networking sites. Yes, even Farmville and Mafia Wars had game testers.

After gaining some experience being a game tester with the smaller games, you can begin to submit your resume to video game design companies. Even if they aren't advertising for new hires, your resume needs to hit their inbox once a month so that when the time comes to hire game testers for their new game, your resume will have already made an impact.

What is it Like Testing Video Games?

A few of the work benefits offered to game testers is the ability to work from home. Most of the time, companies will make you sign confidentiality contracts in order to protect their game property just in case you lose it or it gets stolen. If the game is of a particular type, you might not even be allowed to leave the building with it. Getting to work from home is a bonus, but no matter how awesome getting to work in your pajamas is, you are on the clock and may have to put in 12 + hours a day.

Video game testers spend hours a day playing, analyzing, and troubleshooting games alongside programmers. This means that you might hit a glitch in level 10 that has to be dealt with and the only way to figure out if it's a glitch, mistake or programming error is to play the same part over, and over, and over again. That's the reality of being a video game tester

Being a video game tester isn't always fun and games, but if you have a passion for gaming, a mind that loves puzzles, and the ability to think analytically, you just might be game tester material.
