TOOLS FOR THE DYSLEXIC:LEARNING TO NAVIGATE THROUGH A NON-DYSLEXIC WORLD WHEN YOU VIEW THE WORLD COMPLETELY DIFFERENTLY
Frustrated with the inadequacies of their teaching abilities, my parents spent considerable time explaining information to me in a way I could understand. Later on, I got a job working for a politician writing letters for him to constituents. I want you to understand that despite my learning disabilities and my difficulties in school, I still managed to find ways to deal with my dyslexia continuing to be a successful individual. It happened to be wonderful for me because it allowed me to look at the world in the way that I did. Dyslexia affects many Americans in all age groups with all socioeconomic backgrounds. From understanding driving directions, to speaking and writing, the dyslexic mind will distort information making it almost impossible to understand or will show a non-dyslexic person an interesting perspective on how to look at a given problem. Personally, I believe teachers will sometimes overlook dyslexia because it takes more energy out of their class schedules to help a student learn. It can be the difference of failure or success for the individual suffering with this debilitating ailment.
PUBLIC SPEAKING
You should make it imperative in your mind so you can help yourself overcome the "verbal dyslexia". This could be the difference between a promotion, or your continued work at a dead end job. If you are just realizing this is a problem, there are a few tools I can give you to help you combat this embarrassing issue. Think about everything that you say and compile the sentence in your mind before speaking it.
VERB AGREEMENTS
While dyslexics can flip flop pronouns easily, they also can have a tendency to use different verb tenses in a sentence. Another way to combat this is by correcting yourself after you have realized you made a verb agreement mistake. When speaking with someone else, you should find that slowing down when you speak and correcting what you say will help you form correct sentences.
WRITING
E-mail can also be the easiest way for you to communicate. This will help you communicate with the world immensely.
TAKING STANDARDIZED TESTS
For example:
The feral cat population is heavy in certain parts of the country. Do numbers 1-5 correspond with the answers you think you recorded? Make sure before you continue. Look at each of the questions. The following will be an example of how to do this. Next, look for a pattern. Once you have picked the appropriate answer, fill in the circle on your answer sheet. It stemmed more from the fact that I tend to switch answers, flip the question around and look at it differently then how the author of the question is and write down the incorrect answer. Second, when you get to the end of the page of your answer booklet, recheck all of the answers you have recorded for that page. Most adult dyslexics find it amazingly difficult to take a standardized test. Standardized test exams can be not only challenging, but increasingly frustrating and difficult.
INSTRUCTIONS
When handling standardized tests, you must remember to analyze where you go wrong while taking standardized tests. What I wasn't realizing at the time was that I was jumbling the instructions in my mind. That way, you can double and triple check everything you wrote, (and what they wrote), so you can make sure you are answering their questions in a professional and appropriate manner. When dealing with the flip flopping nature of verb agreements and pronoun usage while speaking or writing another person, the best thing to do is to quickly correct yourself and double check what you have written. Make sure you have a clear idea of where you are going before you venture out in your vehicle. I once bought a futon from a name brand company and couldn't figure out how to put it together no matter how many times I read the instructions and looked at the pictures. Remember that learning how to live with dyslexia will be life long.
