How To Become A Chef - Go All The Way To Michelin Star Level Wearing Your Whites

The career choice of becoming a chef is a very tasty choice indeed

. Cooking and preparing meals is an incredibly creative and compelling occupation. It goes without saying that when you become a chef it is not your average nine to five job, you will be working weekends and evenings. It is also a craft that you will need to master the art of. Becoming a Michelin star chef will require years of dedication.

The job of chef requires a lot of creativity and the ability to cope under pressure; this is the area that will let unproductive chefs down. Firstly, good planning, foresight and imagination are the key skills required.

To run a Michelin starred kitchen you must be able to come up with new and exotic dishes that will appeal to your clientele. A lot of work goes into the designing of an award winning menu, careful planning preparation and skill. Each dish must be perfected and the kitchen must be run efficiently. An important factor is planning how much food to order and when it is bad practice to have ordered too much food or not enough and being left short on the night.

Another aspect of being a chef is man-management, the organisation of rotas and overcoming staff difficulties. Behind the scenes can easily turn into a volatile, pressure cooker of emotions if not managed effectively. The ability to work well within a team is just the tip of the iceberg, organising a complete team of people and emoting them to work well together is a gift.


You will responsible for your Sous chef or assistant chef, who will be your right hand man. There will be a number of kitchen assistants who will also be under head chef and their duties will be to undertake basic food preparation and unskilled tasks along with dishwashing. If you work in a small kitchen the title of chef may include you doing everything. Chef will need to liaise effectively with the Restaurant Manager who will in turn be responsible for the waitressing team.

The first step to becoming a chef begins with deciding upon which route to take you have two choices. The first route is to find a job as a kitchen assistant and work your way up to the top by learning underneath an experienced chef. You will be able to do courses at college such as food hygiene and health and safety to back this up whilst working and gaining direct experience.

The second route to take is by going into full time education and completing a course such as a City & Guilds Diploma in Professional Cookery or a BTEC Diploma.
