How To Become An Attorney

The profession of attorney can be rewarding on many levels

. Of course, successful attorneys can have extremely lucrative careers, but they can also find fulfillment in other areas. Many believe that the cornerstone of the United States lies in its system of laws. Being a guardian of those laws is an awesome responsibility that cannot help but engender a sense of personal accomplishment. The first step in becoming a member of this profession is being accepted to law school.

United States accredited law schools require applicants to hold a degree from an accredited undergraduate school as well as acceptable LSAT scores. The LSAT (or Law School Admission Test) is a standardized test given by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC.) Grades for the test range from 120 to 180. We will discuss this test in more detail a little later.

What one has majored in while at college is essentially not an issue. Law school candidates come from a variety of academic backgrounds, from History and Psychology to Physics and Political Science, to name but a few majors. However since lawyers do extensive reading and writing (among other things), schools like to see a proven track record in courses where a heavy emphasis has been placed on critical reading and clear, well thought out writing.

Two things that admissions officers will be on the lookout for are GPAs and LSAT scores. The most competitive schools tend to require higher GPAs and test scores from their new students. For example, top 10 schools typically accept those with GPAs over 3.7 and LSAT scores over 170.

It goes without saying that proper preparation for the LSAT is vital. There is a wide selection of study guides and practice test available both through the LSAC and through other publishers who specialize in the test prep area. Test takers who tend to the best on this test are those who begin preparing 6 months or more in advance and dedicate several hours each week.

As for a high GPA will in college: this is a usually a result of hard work and perseverance. Success in academics is greater with completion of all assignments, diligent note taking and of course attending all your classes.

The path to becoming an attorney can be an arduous one. But it can also be one that cultivates personal achievement and gratification.
