. There is new decade upon us, and this is always a time to look back and admire our accomplishments. What is likely the most agreed upon useful invention of the last decade, if not the last century, is the Internet.

It is easy to see why this is so. Almost everybody today has some kind of use for the Internet. The main use, of course, is for entertainment. Sending emails, keeping in touch with friends and relatives, downloading movies, watching TV shows online, the list is endless with the vast amount of entertainment you can find on line.

Another great reason why the Internet is becoming so commonplace is the massive number of news sites. It used to be that you only had a couple of newspapers, and three or four networks that you got your information about the world from. Now there are literally hundreds of different sources of information. It's no secret that traditional print media is struggling to stay profitable.

Another fantastic use the Internet is research. There is so much information in the form of academic research papers, collaborative efforts and other scientific studies that make the Internet more and more the number one choice for research. It was researchers who invented the Internet in the first place.

Of course, with all this connection, there is plenty of room for abuse. There are several malicious software programs that have been developed for the sole purpose of causing destruction, or at the very least a compromise of your personal data and security.

The good news, of course, is that there are plenty of software programs designed specifically to fight these malicious software programs, and keep your computer free from viruses and other invasions of your privacy.
