Many parents assume that they do not need to do anything to keep their baby's skin clean and healthy
. They just assume that babies are better able to fight off acne and skin problems than adults. Maybe it is because they associate skin conditions with puberty (which babies, obviously, have yet to hit).
The truth is that it does take some special care to keep your baby's skin clean and healthy. This is the main reason that caring for your baby's skin is so important and it is important to put together a skin care routine early on. The sooner you start taking care of your baby's skin (and teaching him or her how important it is to take good care of his or her skin), the better able your child will be later on to fight acne and other issues. Here are some tips and tricks to help you put together your baby's skin care regimen.
During diaper changes skip the powder. Powder is popular because it absorbs moisture and helps your baby stay dry in his diaper.
The reason you want to skip the powder is because it is easy for the babies to inhale it; even heavier powders like corn starch are bad because those can grow yeast. Instead of using powders or corn starches simply wipe your baby clean with warm water, dry her off with a dry towel and then put on a new diaper. Doing this will keep yeast from breeding and diaper rashes from happening.
A newborn's skin is far too sensitive to light to be taken outdoors into direct sunlight--even if you do everything you can to protect your baby's skin with sunblock. After six months you will want to use a strong baby sunscreen on every inch of your baby's body that is not covered in clothing when you go outside.
Covering your baby's head with a hat and shading the two of you with an umbrella are extra precautions you can take. Any sunburn that does turn up can be treated with a cool soft cloth a few times a day for ten to fifteen minutes per application.
