How To Build A Bookcase

Who doesnt like to read? Reading is done in all ages

, from mommys reading to their growing babies and then into childhood, adults and so on. We all love to read, some mysteries, some novels, some biographies and others just newspapers but in the end we all read every day. Its amazing how much trees are needed for this activity, trees are used to make the book, the paper, and even the bookcase you rest your books on at the end of a day.

It is so important to keep your books organized; they may be your books, your spouses books, childrens books, health and education books or even cook books. No matter what type of books they are it is important to keep them up off the floor and nicely organized, once they end up all over the floor, or on this table and that, under the kids beds, they will get ruined. I have even found books in my childrens pillowcases, crazy I know, my guess is they read till they passed out and shoved it in the pillowcase, it was missing for a while till I went to wash the bed sheets and there it was, all bent out of shape. A bookshelf is a good way to keep all those wonderful books just where they belong so the next time you go to read or your kids want a new book they know just where to look.

Now instead of going out and buying a bookcase why not try and make your own??? Here is a basic list of what you will need:

Tape measure

Hammer or Nail Gun

Nails

Level

Wood

Wood Stain

Saw (optional)

Sandpaper

You will need to measure the area you want you bookcase to be in and take those exact measurements to the lumber yard. You need to know how high and how wide you want your bookcase to be; you can either get the wood and cut it at home with a saw and sandpaper it down or have your lumber yard cut them for you. First place the backboard of your bookshelf down on top of the two side pieces and nail the back of it in to the wood. Then nail in the top and bottom of the bookshelf, you can use a hammer and nails or a nail gun which ever works best for you. Once you stand up the bookshelf you have a big wooden square with a back, top, bottom and two sides, now it is time to make the shelves. Depending on how high your bookshelf is depends on how many shelves you have you need to keep in mind they cant be too close together or they may not fit any books. An average bookcase will have about 4 shelves, and the bottom can also be considered a shelf giving you 5 shelves to place your books on. Measure the inside of the bookshelf one last time make sure you wood fits in snug, sand it down with sandpaper if it needs on the sides. Fit it into place, use the level and make sure it is perfectly straight, then once ready nail the shelves into both sides of the bookcase making sure it is secure. Once you are done with all shelves, dust it off and give it a nice stain let it dry completely and start organizing your books.
