An electromagnetic motor is a very important part of several machines from electronic toys to vehicular engines
. The job of an electromagnetic motor is to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. If you want to learn how they work, you should try to build one yourself. You will need only basic things that you can buy from a hardware store. Let's have a look at what you need to do to build an electromagnetic motor:
1.Leaving 3 inches from either end, wrap a copper wire tightly around a D cell battery at least seven times. Be sure to leave the ends of the wire free as they are required to function as leads.
2.To prevent the coil from unraveling, wrap the ends of the wire around in a circle. This will secure the coil.
3.Place the coil on a table and rub the lead using a sandpaper. Make sure that you don't remove the varnish from the opposite side. The varnished and unvarnished ends are both important because the function of the unvarnished side is to allow the flow of current and the varnished end interrupts current flow.
4.When the coil is rotated, both the varnished and the unvarnished ends come in contact with current. This momentarily interrupts the electric flow and this causes the coil to spin.
5.Put the magnet and the battery in a holder and then place the coil in it in the holder in such a way that the lead wires are inserted in the slots and completely secured.
6.If the coil is appropriately inserted, it will spin.
Electromagnetic motors can be easily made for classroom projects. Electromagnets are better than permanent magnets because they can be switched on and off as per your wish. Besides, building electromagnetic motors won't require a large amount.
