How To Build The Exchange Hosted Environment

Creating your own Exchange Hosted Environment has become possible and easy with the

advent of the Exchange Server 2010 SP2 that uses the Address Book Policies (ABP). It has several steps to follow. Therefore though it seems easy apparently, it has difficult sections as well. Creating the platform can be easily done but the configuration and provisioning part is somewhat difficult.

The Exchange 2010 hosting has a huge demand now in the market so as to build an environment for hosting. Previously, there were the hosted Exchange and Address List Segregation along with the option of Hosting in the Exchange Server 2010. However, Microsoft no more recommends this option. Instead, it admonishes the usage of Enterprise deployment of Exchange Server 2010 SP2 paired with the Address book policies and a Control Panel to associate every part together.

The Microsoft has issued some articles and tutorials on the Exchange 2010 Hosting, its future and some guidelines on how to build the hosting environment and changing from the old platform to the new one.

The Guidance document goes on the describing several things covering the following points:

1.Building the provisioning system and security system of the Active Directory and Exchange.

2.System policies and settings.

3.Architecture, design and the scalability

4.Outlook Anywhere, offline Address Books (OAB),

5.A self service portal for the resellers and all the users.

The guidance document leads describes several steps that must be taken care of while creating the hosted or multi-tenant Exchange Environment. There is no specific guideline or a manual available for the actual building method but on following the guidelines properly, you can be assured that you running the Exchange 2010 Hosting accurately.

The guidance documents talks about the instances that one needs to be aware of while building the hosted Environment. It explains the dos and donts while creating hosting environment. For instances, you must not use the msExchQueryBaseDNoption in OWA or should not change the ACLs for the Address List Segregation in the Exchange 2007 etc.

Microsoft never provides any script for building the environment. The reason behind this the ecosystem of the hosting partners. The hosting partners know the procedure and they have years of experience too. Another reason is to maintain the product secrecy.

If you want to hire these Hosting partners, you have to pay them. But if you wish to create the whole exchange 2010 Hosting environment yourself, then you will require .NET developers and infrastructure engineers who will create a network of all the stuffs, assemble them together and create the desired end product. In order to compare between the services providers and doing it yourself, you have to; at least, take up this much risk of hiring developers. However, never forget that the hosting vendors work very closely to the Microsoft hence have all the updates as and when released. Therefore they can provide you with updated solutions when a new service is launched. This wont be available if you try to do it yourself.
