How To Build Your Own Steam Shower
It isn't necessarily all that expensive and you don't have to rip your bathroom apart in order to have a steam shower built
for you. Should you want to build one yourself, here are some of the things that you will need to do.
Cover the roof of your shower enclosure
Seal the enclosure with a special door
Install a steam shower generator
Optional: something to sit on such as a tiled, fixed, or folding bench.
If you want a steam shower suite, it includes a shower, a steam jet, and built in seating. It will take up approximately the
same amount of space as a normal bathtub enclosure.
It is possible to have a steam shower converted from a walk in shower, however, the enclosure may not be sufficiently large
to include a place to sit down. Without a place to sit down you won't be able to relax and sit down while you are taking your
steam shower and you'd have to remain standing during the entire shower.
Steam Shower Structure and Sealing
The Structure
The ceiling and walls of your shower enclosure need to be made of waterproof material such as fiberglass, limestone, granite,
marble, or tile.
Cover the roof
Most shower doors are shorter than the ceiling by at least a foot. Therefore, you'll need to purchase an acrylic dome that is
lightweight, or install a cover that is made of a material such as stainless steel or fiberglass. You also have to consider a
curved or sloped shower ceiling since steam condenses. Should the ceiling of the shower be flat, the condensed water would
drip constantly.
Seal Your Shower Enclosure
Your shower enclosure must be tightly sealed. If water vapor or steam escapes, you're looking at damages to the wallpaper,
paint, and drywall. In addition, you'll also have to repair all of the problems that are caused by rotting if the steam
penetrates your floor, ceiling, and walls. You'll also need the right type of door to ensure that you have a shower enclosure
that is vapor tight. Many companies will sell you a steam shower door in numerous colors and styles.
Now, About That Steam
In order to build you're steam shower, you're going to have to install a steam generator. You may need the help of an
electrician and a plumber for this job. The generator must connect up to 240V and the water line. Trying to decide where to
put the generator is usually the largest challenges in the design.
