The truth is that many people do not know very much about their brakes outside of knowing that they stop your car when you press the brake pedal. How they operate and how they need to be properly maintained is out of the realm of most drivers. But, it shouldnt be. Drivers need to understand, at a basic level, how car components work and how to check these components, to ensure that your vehicle is working properly and efficiently.

So, how do you know when your brakes are not working optimally? First, you have to know how to check them. The good news is that there are some simple to follow steps that all car owners can follow to perform a self-assessment of your brakes.

1. Listen and feel: As part of driving on a regular basis, pay attention to unnatural sounds that come from your brakes and make sure that your brakes feel firm.

2. Examine the brake disc: Brake discs are the first thing that you should inspect. To do this, look for rough spots or grooves in the disc. They should be rather shiny and uniform.

3. Examine the brake pads: The pads are a little more difficult to see, but all you have to do is look up at the top of the brake disc to see them. You should be looking at the thickness of the pad. The general rule is that if the pad is less than an eighth of an inch, then they need to be replaced.

4. Examine the brake lines: The final thing to look at is the brake line. Look for cracks and corrosion. Ideally, the rubber in the lines should be soft and a little flexible.

These are the three main things that you should be looking for when inspecting your brakes. And, while you are down there, it is a good idea to clean your brakes and wheels. Brake dust and debris adds up easily and needs to be cleaned off to keep your brakes and tires in optimal shape.

They will be able to tell for sure if your brakes need to be repaired or replaced. And, when it comes to brake repairs, it is not something that you can leave for another day.
