How To Cheer Up--naturally!
Depression is a serious medical condition that is marked by persistent feelings of sadness
, loss of interest, and unexplained fatigue, among other symptoms. If you have been feeling down for an excess of two weeks at a time, then it's time to have an important chat with your doctor.
But on the other hand, part of being human is being struck by sadness. Whether it's through the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or some other form of stress, we will have our share of trials. So how can you cheer up when it isn't a medical condition you are up against? Let me share some of my strategies with you.
First, laugh it up! We've all heard the expression that states, "Laughter is the best medicine," but it's really true! Medical professionals have done extensive research on the subject. Getting in a good giggle will improve your overall health and increase longevity.
So turn on your favorite sitcom, pop your favorite comedy into the DVD player, or even go to a local comedy club. An improvisational comedy club in my neighborhood becomes my number one hangout when I'm feeling stressed or blue. Take along a friend or significant other so that you can have inside jokes to keep you rolling with laughter until your next visit.
Second, exercise! No, really. Exercise causes your body to release endorphins, which create feelings of well-being.
Plus, recent medical research has discovered that a half hour of cardiovascular exercise performed every single day has the same effect on the brain as an SSRI--a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor--the category that most anti-depressants fit into. (If you do fear that you have the medical condition of depression, don't substitute exercise for medication. This is an important decision that your doctor needs to be involved in).
Third, accomplish something. Learn a new skill or finish a project that you have been working on. When I'm upset, I often get in my kitchen and test a new recipe or make a batch of cookies or a loaf of bread. It gives me a feeling of satisfaction afterward, and I forget my troubles while I concentrate on measuring out ingredients.
Finally--and this is along the same lines--do something kind for someone else. Give your spouse a back rub or donate some hand-crocheted hats to the homeless shelter. Spend an hour volunteering at the food bank or pull weeds out of your elderly neighbor's garden. If you forget yourself to help someone else, you are bound to get the warm fuzzies. Trust me.
