Chip shot is a shot that is around 40 to 20 yards long and is hit near the green
. Your goal here should be to get the ball withing 3 feet of the hole consistently. This allows you to 1 putt easily and save strokes. Note: If you are a left-handed golfer just mentally change these tips by reversing left to right and etc.
The position I like to take while hitting chips is to keep my feet really close to each other. Then I move so that the ball is quite far back in my stance. It is near the outer side of my right foot. Then while hitting you should make sure to hit through the ball and down towards the ground. By keeping the ball back in your stance you avoid the dreaded scooping motion that comes easily if the ball too forward in your stance.
It is also recommendable to keep your wrists locked and just move your shoulder while hitting. By keeping the wrists locked you limit the number of moving parts in your swing and thus make it more repeatable. If you hit it this way your swing should be pretty much the same as your putting stroke.
When you practise chipping you should get a feel on how long does the ball roll when it lands with each club. What this allows you to do is aim your chips on where you want them to land. When you can get this clear target in your head it makes it mentally easier to hit it right there when you have that clear target. This also allows you to train chipping pretty much anywhere since you can only practise on getting the ball land where you want.
Then just keep practising and soon you will find your balls getting closer to the hole and giving you easier putts to make.
