How To Choose And Install Hardware Knobs And Pulls

Nothing gives a cabinet, cupboard or closet a facelift like a new cabinet knob or pull

. Cabinet knobs and pulls are not only functional, they also look great. Hardware knobs and pulls come in a dazzling array of shapes, materials, colors and styles. Youll find glass, brass, wood, ceramic, sterling silver and rust-finish knobs and pulls, and they come in contemporary, retro and traditional styles. There are even knobs and pulls especially for kids bedrooms.

Knobs and pulls require only the most basic of handy work skills and tools and an eye for alignment. To install hardware knobs and pulls, youll need the knob or pull (of course) and the screw that came with it, along with a ruler or measuring tape, a pencil for marking position, a screwdriver and a power drill.

1. Choose the right hardware knobs and pulls for your cabinet or cupboard. Consider how much the pull will be used. For kitchen cabinets, youll probably something fairly simple and sturdy for easily handling. If the knob is for a less-used dresser or bed side table, then some funky, more ornate pulls may be suitable.

2. Take the time to count how many knobs and pulls you need. Theres nothing more annoying than miscounting and having to head back to the hardware store (in-person or online) to buy more.

3. Decide where you want to position the knob or pull. Make sure it is positioned at least 1 inch from the edge of the door and in the bottom third of the door. And be consistent! Make sure all the pulls sit in the same position on each door to give your handy work a tidy, professional look.

4. Mark the position of the knob or pull. Once you have used your ruler to establish a position for your knob, mark the spot using a pencil. A knob will require one hole and a pull will require two to four holes. Mark each hole with the help of a ruler to ensure your work is perfectly straight.

5. Clean any splintering off each door before you start drilling and screwing in your knobs and pulls.

6. Make a starter hole for the knob by drilling very lightly. If you are sure that the positioning is correct, continue to drill, slowly so that you dont create a splinter in the cabinet door.

7. Install the knob using the screw that came with it. Hold the knob against the cabinet door, and insert the screw into the hole then drill until the screw is tight. Make sure you dont over-tighten the screw because this may cause the cabinet door to splinter or buckle. Tighten the screw until it is just firmly in place.

8. Repeat the steps until all the hardware knobs and pulls are installed! Note that if your cabinets are made of very soft or thin wood, you may be able to avoid drilling and install hardware knobs and pulls purely using a flathead or Phillips screwdriver. Once all your knobs and pulls are in place, sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
