When considering any type of surgery it's important not to make an uninformed decision

. The same rule applies when choosing a plastic surgeon. In this article we will list the various factors and guidelines you should take into account when shopping for the perfect doc.

Certification

Board certification can be confusing to some. One look through the yellow pages and it seems as though every practice is promoting all types of various memberships and certifications. It can be hard to make sense of it all!

Certification boards all require various amounts of training and experience. Basically, not all board-certified physicians are made equally. Membership is a society or board-certification does not necessarily guarantee a successful outcome. You may even want to familiarize yourself a few of the branches in order to gain better insight into what you should look for. Likewise, it is very important to gain an understanding of the doctor's training and educational history in order to make the best choice.

Education

Two types of medical schools and degrees are available:

-Doctor of Medifine (MD): Attends a four-year school and studies allopathic medical theory.

- Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO): attends a four-year osteopathic school and studies holistic and traditional medicine.

Both degrees are considered equivalent to one another, and the curriculum at each school is nearly identical. This essentially means that osteopathic doctors are legally and professionally equivalent to medical doctors.

To become a physician, students must complete four years of undergraduate training, four years of medical school, and additional time completing internship and residency.

To be licensed in the US, physicians must graduate from an accredited medical school, pass an examination, and receive one to seven years of graduate education, depending on their designated specialty.

Credentials

In order to determine whether or not a doctor is board certified, you can visit the American Board of Medical Specialties website. The ABMS boasts 24 member boards that certify physicians in 88 various medical specialties. You may also visit your state's medical board website to investigate malpractice judgments and disciplinary decisions.

At the end of the day, the best judge is your gut. Meet with the surgeon and get a feel for how he interacts with his patients. Don't be afraid to ask questions pertaining to their education or the procedure you're ultimately considering. A good surgeon will have no problems answering such questions, and if they do, there are certainly other options available to you.
