How To Choose Green Pet Products

Sustainable living is becoming more and more of an interest for many people

. With the growing greening trend, more and more companies are moving toward producing green pet products. Now, you can find a plethora of pet foods that claim to be organic, or pet toys made from renewable resources.

Sadly, not all the companies who are jumping on the green bandwagon are doing it for the right reasons, or terribly well for that matter. Some are trying, but in the effort of making their product "greener" they sometimes make the mistake of adding extra packaging or failing to admit that they have added another undesirable product. Green washing is alive and well in every industry.

However, there are many companies that wear their commitment to the environment loudly and proudly. Their commitment is transparent through the process of choosing the products they make, how the make them, how they dispose of waste and how they package them. You can look up their product line and see every thing that they make is done with the environment in mind. A visit to the company website will tell you a lot about them and the things they produce.

One of the ways that they do this is through the use of alternative fibres to make products that we already consume. Instead of using fabrics made from cotton, a crop which is harmful to the soil, many of these companies are exploring cloth made from other fibres for making dog toys, blankets, beds, leashes and collars. It is becoming easier and easier for you to find products made from hemp or bamboo fibre.

Some products use recycled items to make something new. One company uses cloth that is made from recycled pop bottles to make beds and mats for dogs and cats. Another uses recycled newsprint for litter for small animals such as ferrets, guinea pigs, rats and cats. Yet another company uses parts of the corn cob, which previously would have gone straight to compost, to make animal bedding. And another uses soy based "plastics" to make bags that are biodegradable, making picking up after your dog easy and green.

Some pets have dietary issues. Thankfully, more and more pet food companies are producing products that are free of many of the common food allergens that trigger dogs with various conditions. It is easier now to find pet treats, foods and training products that are hormone free, grain free, and gluten free.

It is also easier now for pet owners to find foods that reflect their personal food choices, not simply the nutritional needs of their pet. So if you eat organic food, your pet can too. If you eat only vegan foods, so can your pet. And you can even find kosher pet food to meet with your kosher diet.
