How To Choose Material For Blister Pharmaceutical Packaging

Choice of material for blister pharmaceutical packaging is entirely dependent on

the sensitivity of product from external elements like light, air, heat and moisture. Since every pharmaceutical product has individual degree of resistance, the type of storage and material are selected only after thorough tests and considering several factors. Those tests are performed during the stability studies, so as to identify which material is suitable for them. There are different categories and sub-categories of blister pharmaceutical packaging material, which are chosen as per their suitability with the product.

Forming Films

To create deep drawn pocket in the blister packaging (that contains the product), plastic materials are used. Mostly used plastic forming films are polypropylene (PP), PVDC (polyvinylidene chloride), polyvinyl chloride (PVC1) and PVC and ACLAR (CTFE). They all may look similar in appearance but vary greatly in their features. They are used together with aluminium foil (called lidding material) to air tight the forming film case. To complete the integrated blister packaging both forming films and lidding material must complement each other. Means, both should have matching feature that could make the pharmaceutical packaging successful. At present, polypropylene (PP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are the popular choice for packaging companies because of their ability to support cold form material like aluminium whilst itself being thermoformed.

Usually, forming film material is neutral in color and is transparent in appearance, allowing the product visible to the user even in sealed condition. Though, the forming films can be opaque if the package has to be made childproof or protect it light.

Lidding Material

Lidding materials are used for sealing when tablets or capsules are fed in to the forming film cases. They consist of support material such as aluminium, having printed primer at one side and sealing agent on the other. The side of sealing agent is faced towards the product and forming film, then it is sealed with heating technique. Lidding material can be Hard Aluminium, Soft Aluminium, Paper-Aluminium and Paper-PET-Aluminium. An ideal lidding material for any pharmaceutical product must withstand sealing temperature, that too without discoloring or tacking. Also, it should resist abrasion and bind printing inks strongly so as to withstand adhesive tapes peeling force. Secondly, the chosen material must guarantee the rate of water-vapor transmission as low as to suit the package such as push-thru or peel-off. The choice of lidding material also depends on the sealing strength that has to be within a predetermined level of tolerance.
