How To Choose The Best Web Hosting Service For Your Website
If you were to type web hosting followed by your location into a Google search window
, you are likely to receive thousands of results. With all of the hosting providers out there, it can be difficult to decide who is going to give you the best possible service. When you are embarking on your search for a host, however, there are three major points that you should be looking for in a provider:
Server Platform and Hardware Requirements
You will need to ensure that the web hosting service you employ is capable of supporting the platforms for the programming environments that you are hoping to set up. For example, programming languages like Active Server Pages (ASP), Virtual Basic scripts, Cold Fusion, Microsoft Access or Microsoft SQL database will require support for Windows platforms. In the same way, programming languages like Perl, CGI, SSI, PHP or mySQL database will require support for Unix or Linux platforms.
Disk Space and Bandwidth Requirements
If the website that you are intending to create will not be very big (minimal web pages), then disk space should not be too much of a concern 200MB to 500MB will suit your needs perfectly. If, however, the website that you are intending to create is quite content heavy (with graphics, mp3 or videos), you will need 500MB to 1000MB disk space. Your bandwidth requirement will depend on how much site traffic you think you will receive. If you are expecting a lot of visitors, you will need a web hosting provider that offers huge bandwidths (40GB to 100GB per month) in order to meet demand.
Other Hosting Features
You will want to get as much out of your web hosting provider as you can, so it is always beneficial to look for services that offer a number of additional features for your convenience. Can they support any video clips that you may like to place on your website? Are they compatible with tools like Dreamweaver or FrontPage? Can they support the creation of an online store if you choose to add one at a later date? Do they provide you with email accounts? And so on.
Whilst there are, of course, other factors that you will want to look at when choosing a web hosting service for your website (such as their reliability, support and customer service), the above are the most important technological points that any good hosting provider should possess. If the service cannot provide you with the above information, you should take your business elsewhere.
