While apartment housing units and office buildings represent two very different types

of organizations, their structures and functions are often very similar. Both are managed by a leasing authority who rents space to tenants for either residential or commercial purposes.

Consequently, building mail centers are needed in both types of facilities. It is essential that building managers be aware of the guiding principles of mail box design in order to choose the best apartment mailboxes or office mailboxes for their tenants.

The most important factors to consider are the attributes of the wall in which the mail boxes will be mounted. Wall space determines the number, size, and configuration of a mail cluster. The status of the wall as either a new construction or a remodel also plays a role.

Finally, the presence of a corridor or a room behind the building mail center plays a major determining role in what kind of apartment mailboxes or office mailboxes can be mounted on that wall.

Building managers must begin the assessment process with measurements of wall space. If the wall is particularly long, and there are not that many tenants, then vertical, front loading mailboxes can be used.

One of the major advantages these mailboxes offer is easy delivery that often results in more accurate delivery as well. When mail carriers can simply drop mail into the box from the front, they can catch mistakes much more easily than they might when folding or bending mail to load from the rear.

The nature of the wall itself is the next consideration to take into account when choosing apartment mailboxes and office mailboxes. Mail boxes can be recess mounted to the wall or surface mounted to the wall.

Recessed mounting always creates a more symmetrical building mail center than surface mounting. While this is easy to accommodate in new constructions, remodeling often requires surface mounting.

Finally, the presence of a corridor or mail room behind the wall is the final determining factor in choosing apartment mailboxes or office mailboxes for building mail centers. Rear loading mail boxes, while not as convenient for mail carriers to access, offer users maximum security. However, they can only be accessed from a space behind the wall.

If the building cannot accommodate such a space, then surface mounted, horizontal, front loading units must be used in order to work around both limited wall space itself ant the lack of available space behind the wall as well.
