How To Choose The Right Home Security Camera
The home security camera has become more popular in recent years
, because it can identify people if they break into your home, to be sure, but they can also tell you who's at your front door without you having to open that door, and they can also show other activity, like vandalism, around your home. A home security camera will deter many criminals from acting out on your property, because most criminals simply want an easy target. If you're looking for the right home security camera to invest in, here are some things you should look at.
A home security camera is going to be used to monitor what's going on on your property, like a second set of eyes, but you may also want to use it to record what's going on so that you have evidence if you should need to press charges on a particular crime. If that's what you want to do, you'll need to plug your home security camera into a security digital video recorder, or some other device that can record activity for you, like a computer with video recording capabilities. Here, we will simply talk about how you choose the right home security camera.
So first you need to decide where you want the security cameras and the field of view (FOV) they will provide. If you were only thinking of installing one camera you would probably want to put it on the front of your garage or on a porch looking toward the street. You would also want a fairly wide field of view so a camera with a 3.6mm lens would probably be best. This will provide a good overall view of someone approaching you home.
This is going to give you good basic coverage as a home security camera. However, it's not going to give you exquisite facial details for someone who's more than 20 to 25 feet away. For that, you'll need a lens of either 6 mm or 8 mm. The larger your lenses, the more detail you can get at a distance. That has some drawbacks, too, which is to say that your field of view is going to be smaller. It's like looking through higher power binoculars. An option for covering more area and still have the detail you want is to get more than one camera for your home security camera system.
Good picture quality also depends on light. Just about any home security camera is going to give you a good picture during the day, but for nighttime viewing or at other times of low light, you're going to want additional lighting. You can install a floodlight or porch light, for example, and these could be motion sensitive. If you don't want to install more lighting or you can't, you can get an infrared security camera as part of your security system. During the day, these cameras take color pictures, and during the night, they take black-and-white ones, using infrared illuminators.
Another question you want to ask yourself is what type of video resolution you want from your camera. A camera will list its resolution in what are called "lines of resolution," or TVL. A standard analog camera, for example, usually has a TVL of 380, 420, 480, or 550 lines; the higher the number, the greater the resolution or the sharper the image. Other factors, too, affect the image, including the quality of the lens or the digital signal processor (DSP) that has been used; any of these factors can improve or lessen overall quality, depending on the quality of the factor itself. Therefore, lines of resolution are important, but must be considered along with other factors.
When first looking for a home security camera to fit your needs it may seem a bit overwhelming. So by first determining what area you need to cover, where you want to place it, the lighting conditions and if it is for an overall view or a more detailed view you have a good place to start. If you really are not sure which camera is best sometimes the only way to really get started is to purchase a camera see what kind of results you get and go from there. Most retailers will offer a trial period where if the camera doesn't work for you needs you can simply return it for a different camera.
