How To Choose The Right Mountain Bike

If you've set your heart on a mountain bike, but feel bombarded by the vast array

These days there's no such thing as just a mountain bike. Many bike stores now offer a range of great value hard-tails to premium end full suspension mountain bikes. Not only is there a vast difference in price between these bikes, there's also a noticeable difference in riding experience.

Firstly you should ask yourself, what will I use my mountain bike for? If you enjoy the occasional off road experience through smooth trails and woodland then the hard-tail is best suited to you. However, if your idea of a cycle ride includes extreme downhill dirt slopes and rocky terrain then you may want to look at full suspension bikes.

The main feature of the hard-tail bike is all in the name. These bikes provide adequate suspension in the front forks only which gives you better control on rugged terrain. The hard-tail bike has a much stiffer frame than its full suspension counterpart, which therefore makes it easier to get all your energy to the pedals. Now with none of your effort being wasted, and all of it travelling to the right place you'll find it easy to pedal at speed and up slopes.

The other plus side of purchasing a hard-tail bike is the price. Hard-tails are significantly cheaper than good quality full suspension bikes, due to the basic design of them and the simplicity. So if you're buying a mountain bike on a budget, for the occasional off-road experience then a hard-tail is the right choice for you.

Full suspension bikes are the godfather of mountain bikes. They can range in price from 200 to well over 3000, all dependant on how serious you take your biking. Whatever price range you choose to look at, these bikes will allow you to do some serious exploring.

The suspension is active on the front forks and the rear of the bicycle. It's worth looking at the amount of suspension travel these bikes have as it varies widely. A basic principle is: the more travel the easier the bike can absorb high impacts. Although with this the effort you need to put into the pedals increases.
