It's not so important that the tree surgeon himself is so old as he will doubtless be learning from an old master who will be passing on much of his own wisdom to ensure that the whoever you get is both capable and competent in the tasks you have set him.

That said, while experience plays an important part in differentiating one tree surgeon from another, whoever you have to come round to help you must have some qualifications in the trade. As with most industries there are varying degrees of qualification, and these often mean that some surgeons can perform certain types of work while others cannot, and vice versa. This being the case, you need to make sure that your tree surgeon is fully qualified for the work that you are asking him or her to complete as there may be insurance issues if it all goes wrong and they are not.
